Once we've established that the Gospel drives our work, we are ready to learn how to work. Think of a three-legged stool. Each leg of the stool is essential for godly work habits. The three legs are diligence, integrity, and humility.
Proverbs on diligence at work. These verses either speak to the danger of idleness or the virtue of diligence.
6:6-11; 10:4-5; 10:26; 12:24, 27; 13:4; 14:4; 15:19; 16:3; 18:9; 19:15, 24; 20:4, 13, 21; 21:5-26; 22:13; 23:20-21; 23:30-35; 24:27, 30-34; 25:16; 26:13-16; 28:19-20; 30:24-25.
Proverbs on integrity at work. Most of these verses speak to the importance of honesty and justice. Many point out the temptation to dishonesty. See, for example, 9:17, "Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious."
9:17; 10:2-3; 12:2-3, 9; 16:11-12; 20:10, 14, 17, 23; 21:15; 22:28; 23:10-11; 28:16; 29:24, 27.
Proverbs on humility at work. These verses address honoring authority and letting praise come to us as opposed to seeking it out.
14:35; 19:12, 16; 20:2; 22:4, 29; 23:1-2; 25:6-8; 25:27; 27:2, 18, 21; 28:2.
We should thank God that he has called all of us to important work and pray we would be satisfied to serve him where we are.
