Grace is always sweetest when we comprehend the extent of our need. Sunday morning we continued our series called, The Greatest Story Every Told, by thinking about the Fall. In Adam we all sinned (Rom. 5:12) but salvation has come through Christ. I ended the sermon asking why it is important for Christians to understand the Fall.
- For one, God uses this teaching to humble us. How can we be proud when we know that murder and anger both come for sinful hearts?
- Second, God uses this teaching to give us greater confidence in him. Because of our sin we would never turn to God--unless God were to turn to us first. Our confidence must be in him.
- Third, this teaching helps us read the Bible better. Instead of seeing it as a collection of moral stories we now see it as one story exposing our hearts. We can identify with the worst sinners in Scripture because they, like us, sinful. As we identify with them we see our need for someone to reverse the effects of the Fall.
- Finally, we need this teaching to see Jesus clearly: his life, his death, his resurrection. This is God's ultimate and perfect answer to a fallen world.
